The Dandenong Ranges

These ranges are a set of low lying mountains about 35kms east of Melbourne which makes it a short journey for a spectacular day out. With a more cooling and fresher climate, it’s certainly a destination different to the hustle and bustle of Melbourne. The glorious hills flaunt delicate clean, fresh air and are lined with beautiful green ferns, cafes, breweries and fruits.

Puffing Billy Railway

Puffing Billy is arguably one of the most well known Victorian attractions. And believe it or not, it’s one of the most beautiful preserved steam railways in the world. It’s over 100 years old and still runs on its original track which is 24 kilometres long. It operates from Belgrave through to Gembrooke and while on the train (with glorious open windows, where you can leg dangle) you’ll pass through stunning forests and fern-lined gorges. Puffing Billy is undoubtedly Australia’s favourite train.

The botanic gardens

This botanic garden is home to vibrantly coloured flowers such as azaleas, camellias, daffodils and cherries. With seasonal changes happening throughout the year in this gorgeous region, there are always stunning and colourful flowers in bloom.

Cuckoo Restaurant

Puffing Billy is iconic to the Dandenong Ranges as is the Cuckoo restaurant. Slightly over 60 years old this 400 seat restaurant is decorated in a Bavarian-style way, and the staff remain dressed in traditional costume. Traditionally serving German food, there’s an abundance of food to satisfy all taste buds. Further to this, there’s live entertainment with music, a traditional floor show, infamous cowbell ringing and of course this place isn’t complete without the yodelling.

1000 Steps

If you’re ready to work off your food and drink then perhaps you can tackle the 1000 steps of the Dandenong Ranges. Its a top-stop for fitness enthusiasts across Melbourne and originally built to commemorate our fallen soldiers who fought and died on the Kokoda Trail during WW2. Located in the national park, it’s not an easy task, but it’s well worth it.
